As promised in the introduction, we are discussing each of the available optional buys for Rising Sun. First up is the “Metal Coins” pack.
For $20 you can get a package of 65 Kickstarter-Exclusive metal coins to replace their plastic counterparts included in the base game. 65 should be more than enough, even if playing with 6 players, and they’ll even have that extra-authentic looking weathered effect sure to impress your grandma.
Why don’t they come in the base game already?
That’s a fair question, and the answer is relatively straightforward. If the current MSRP is $100 for the base game as-is, with the metal coins added every single copy would need to sell for at least 10% more. To some folks, that’s no big deal and sounds well worth it. However, to lots of other folks, that’s the difference between being able to afford the game and not. At the end of the day, publishers would love to give players every upgraded component possible, but they wouldn’t sell many games if the MSRP had to be $350 no matter how good the quality.
The Budget Conscious – PASS
They are neat looking, but the base game already comes with everything I need. Besides, I would rather have real money than fake money.
The Reveler – BUY
You can make my game look even more authentic Japanese-y!? I may just buy 2 and use the extra in another oriental game I own.
The Humble Collector – BUY
You had me at Kickstarter Exclusive.
