We’ve all heard the expression “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, that’s just what I did the first time I laid eyes on Modern Art, and I’m glad I was wrong as it ended up being one of the most addicting games at CMON Expo this year. As previously announced, CMON has given this Reiner Knizia classic a makeover so a new generation of fans can enjoy it. First published in German in 1992, it is widely considered one of the best auction-style games and is currently ranked #223 on BGG. This new version keeps the gameplay consistent with the original, but has added incredible artwork by five of the best modern artists in the world today. Now available at your FLGS for MSRP of $29.99.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in the high-stakes world of fine art auctions, there’s nothing more beautiful than making a buck. In Modern Art, players take on the role of curators, buying and selling paintings for their museum. Over the course of four rounds, they take part in a number of auctions, trying to get the best value for the pieces in their collection. Whoever makes the most money wins the game (and keeps their job).
• Alternating Auctions – There are five different types of auctions in the game. Each one requires a unique strategy if player hope to get the best bargain.
• Market Value – The value of an artist’s work is determined by how many of their paintings sell. The more popular they are, the more money their work can be sold for.
• Real Beauty – Modern Art features the work of some of he most talented artists in the world. Each piece that goes up for auction is breathtaking to behold.
